inews won't post

I have just set up a leafnode server, which seems to be working nicely. 
Unfortunately, I can't post to it from trn. This seems to be due to inews 
failing:

dg@pearl [9] [12:55] inews -D -h ~/.article  
No such newsgroups as "alt.test".
(Article not posted.)

This happens no matter what newsgroup the message goes to, and I've verified 
the existence of the article in the database. Interestingly, posting from 
netscape works fine.

Has anyone else seen this?

I'm using Red Hat Linux, i386, and inews 1.7.2.
