    chmod g+w failed.postings

I pretty much don't bother with the octal form of chmod any more,
because you can do "+" and "-" with the symbolic modes (as here), it's
a lot more mnemonic to do things like

    chmod u=rw,go=r mydata
    chmod a+x myscript

, "X" is neat, and I agree with

    chown news.news failed.postings
