[leafnode-list] "fetch" doesn't

I've saw a question much like this in the archives, but the accompanying
answer was "upgrade to 1.9.2" which doesn't help in my case since 1.9.2 is
the first version I installed.	I installed leafnode 1.9.2 using the rpm
available from rufus (i.e. via rpmfind), after mounting a 3gb partition as
/var/spool/news then I ran fetch, and it grabbed a list of newsgroups from
my ISP. I went over to my news reader and downloaded headers in a couple of
groups, I also retrieved the message leafnode put in automatically.
I checked the /var/spool/news/interesting.groups directory and sure enough
saw a couple of brand new 0 length files with names matching the two groups
I'd just looked at. I then ran fetch again, waited for the command prompt
to come back, started my news reader and. . . Nothing.
I have read the README and every man page associated with leafnode, and as
far as I can tell fetch really should be fetching messages, the following
is a brief excerpt from a telnet session:
---- CUT HERE ----
# df /var/spool/news
Filesystem 1k-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/hdb2 3113863 3192 2949620 0% /var/spool/news
# /usr/sbin/fetch -vvvv
Removing stale lockfile.
1.9.2: verbosity level is 4
Trying to connect to news.andara.com ... connected.
Getting all newsgroups from news.andara.com
# df /var/spool/news
Filesystem 1k-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/hdb2 3113863 3192 2949620 0% /var/spool/news
---- CUT HERE ----

P.S. Certainly this program cannot be accused of producing vast quantities
of useless debugging information. . . P)
