Or apply it and bump the version number.  Even if you release a patch
and announce it, people are less likely to pay attention than if you
bump the version number and those using binary packages will have a
better idea of what they're getting.

How far back does this bug go - is it a problem for the 1.6 series (slow
release cycle, Debian?  Never!)?
