Aaah - I didn't realise this was a known problem.  I'm on 1.9.7 and I
still get the same issue, and I won't to avoid an upgrade because I'm hoping to
get a new computer in a month or two.  Therefore I thought I'd share the
ugly workaround of using "fetchnews -n", this will prevent the deletion of
groups from the interesting.groups folder:

http://www.reinwarth.de/alexander/linux/txt/fetchnews.8.txt

-n     Lösche    die    Verknüpfungen    im    Verzeichnis
       /var/spool/news/interesting.groups  nicht.  So kann
       das automatische Abbestellen von Newsgruppen unter­
       bunden werden.
