[leafnode-list] newby fetchnews problem

I've installed Leafnode but when I run fetchnews (for the first time) it seems
to run briefly then exits without any kind of message and without doing
anything.

1. /etc/leafnode/config has the correct news server address and is owner/group
'news' and is of course read/writable by user 'news'.

2. "telnet localhost 119" results in the correct connection to leafnode nntp
daemon.

3. "inetd -d" gives the result below:
ADD : nntp proto=tcp, wait.max=0.40, user.group=news.(null) builtin=0
server=/usr/sbin/tcpd

Can anyone suggest what to look at next please?
