Yes, it exists with owner/group 'news' and is read/writeable by news. My
second post, which probably wizzed by this one from you in transit, lists the
permissions of various directories and files.

This is where it all falls apart - when I run fetchnews it hesitates for a
moment then just exits with no output (either to screen or disk).
