Can you run fetchnews from inside gdb? I.e., do the following:

gdb fetchnews
GNU gdb 4.18
Copyright 1998 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
GDB is free software, covered by the GNU General Public License, and you are
welcome to change it and/or distribute copies of it under certain conditions.
Type "show copying" to see the conditions.
There is absolutely no warranty for GDB.  Type "show warranty" for details.
This GDB was configured as "i386-suse-linux-gnu"...
(gdb) run -vvvv -D -S news.mozilla.org -f

and, if you get the crash, do

(gdb) backtrace

You should now get a nice output where in the source fetchnews failed.

Be patient because running fetchnews from inside gdb makes it slower
(that's because the debugger has to trace the code).
