Try:
which gzip
whereis gzip
file /bin/gzip
ldd /bin/gzip

If you have an RPM based distribution:

rpm -yf `which gzip`

to see if your gzip has changed since you installed it.

> chmod 755 leafnode-2.0b6/pcre/perltest
> tar cf leafnode-pcre-2.0b6.tar leafnode-2.0b6
> gzip -f9 leafnode-2.0b6.tar

(2.0b6_ma1 uses the full path to gzip)
