There is no "daemon" mode. leafnode must be started from either of
these four:

1. inetd (comes with your system)
2. xinetd (http://www.xinetd.org)
3. g2s (I never tried this personally, http://www.jedi.claranet.fr)
4. tcpserver (http://cr.yp.to/ucspi-tcp.html)

Or similar.

tcpserver is small and light-weight if you need it standalone on a small
box.
