[leafnode-list] leafnode losing recent articles?

When reading with gnus using a localhost leafnode server I've noticed
various articles from a particular author being shown as

!* [ 0: Article on Website)] Re: Developmental Homosexuality on a
Personal Level (was Re: New

the author's name being overwritten by part of the subject and lines
incorrectly shown as zero. I thought this might be a gnus problem but I've
tried various test posting and failed (so far) to replicate it, however I
notice that the article has already been expired off my server
date was Date: Mon, 22 Oct 2001 23:02:30 +0100
and its parent article is still there (tested using HEAD <messageid>)

I assume the problem is the rather spaced out subject:
Subject: Re: Developmental Homosexuality on a Personal Level (was Re: New Article on Website)
Message-ID: <3bd75ee2$1@xxxxxxxxxxxx>

and the telenet session records:

200 Leafnode NNTP Daemon, version 2.0b8 running at jailhouse.chezmarshall.freeserve.co.uk
head <9r34gr$rckvj$1@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>
