Calm down, please. The nntp-ext working group will probably
submit the draft to the IESG in December. The current draft
states:

|An NNTP server MAY have an inactivity autologout timer. Such a
|timer MUST be of at least three minutes duration. The receipt of
|any command from the client during that interval SHOULD suffice
|to reset the autologout timer. When the timer expires, the
|server should close the TCP connection without sending any
|response to the client.

I'm not suggesting to work around a tin bug, I'm suggesting to
work on leafnode's standard compliance. If by doing so we hide a
bug in tin, fine. Because I highly doubt that Urs will care to
fix this.
