It occurred to me when typing the following that I should run fetchnews with 
the -f option.  I now have a full list in groupinfo, but Knode still can't 
see it.  I get a message "unable to connect: Operation now in progress"  As 
far as i can see, I have configured everything "according to the book"

Yes /var/spool/news/interesting.groups should be empty because this is a 
fresh install.  There will be nothing there until I select groups from Knode, 
which is my other problem.

There is a partial listing in the groupinfo file, from the time when it 
didn't abort immediately.

I also had initial problems with Kmail crashing as soon as I tried to 
download mail.  This has now fixed itself, but it suggests that the problem 
may not lie with Leafnode.
