Hum, those versions should be phased out by now. Still, the user can
tell the proper path by:

CPPFLAGS="-I/opt/pcre/include" LDFLAGS="-L/opt/pcre/lib" ./configure

Hum. But you did not explicitly rerun configure in that case?
