Not come across these before, but it seems strace requires kernel patching.
Is there not a way to recompile/switch leafnode so that it gives more
debugging trace?

I did run 2.0b8 for a while. The fetchnews problems I had with 1.9.18 made
me try it. I found that while it didn't hang during fetches, it did have
other reliability problems. Often it started segfaulting during fetches.
Often it would "lose" large numbers of groups from the group list. The last
problem I had which made me delete /var/spool/news and go back to 1.9.x was
when it seemed to be retrieving messages but none of them would appear in
the newsreaders, and message counts in the newsreaders became totally
nonsensical. If need be I could go back to it again (maybe an ma version?)
and perhaps try and contribute some feedback to the beta process (I *do* do
software, but only on Windows, so I will probably be a mediocre beta
tester - but I can try!).
