That's enough detail for now, just wanted to be sure it's really the
signal that causes this.

A different issue: Please do make sure your kernel contains all
necessary security patches. Security-relevant changes have been made in
2.2.16 (capabilities exploitable, gets you a root shell with almost any
setuid executable, common instrument is sendmail) and 2.2.20 (ptrace
exploitable, may also give root permissions).
