I reviewed config.log and your build log, and cannot match their
behaviour. Unlike stated above, the compile of this configure test
program fails (because we try to compile a program that fits the old
pcre_exec API), but failure means "new API", so "yes" is correct.

Still, at build time, filterutil.c fails the compile, so I must for now
assume that "missing" or strange file time patterns broke the compile. I
cannot find a bug in the build procedure at this time, and I'm falling
into line with Ralf's analysis.
