I should have hidden these lines better and use an uncommented SHA1 hash
instead...

Yes, but I'm not recalling details, NNTPcache 2.3 is the past, fixed
versions are available -- and the prohibition is there for a
reason.

Please ask the operators of your upstream news server to update to
nntpcache 3.0.1 (it's not a beta release like 2.4* used to be), which is
a stable release but pretty new (April 6th, 2002).
