OK, now that's strange. Can you run with debugmode=2 and check the logs
for suspicious entries? (Make sure you grep for your password and wipe
it out when quoting from the logs, just in case.)

What did linuxconf change in addition to /etc/hosts? What exact system
is it? Distribution, version?
