Just to resolve this one, it looks to be some interaction with the Mdk 8.2
security checking, got this this morning

fetchnews[3432]: store: cannot open current directory
fetchnews[3432]: Could not store /var/spool/news/in.coming/3099-1022563963-1: OS trouble: Permission denied

Both around the same time and on both occasions the cron job that checks
for open ports/world writable files was running
