Please try this:

1.  download and install leafnode 1.9.22 or the latest 1.9.23-pre or -rc
    version

2a. make sure your syslog logs all news information, if unsure, a line like
    this one will do,
    news.*       /var/log/news.all
    (if your syslogd then complains, try news.debug)

2b. touch /var/log/news.all

2c. kill -HUP `cat /var/run/syslogd.pid`

3.  Reproduce the problem

4.  Check in /var/log/news.all for suspicious lines. Lines containing the
    name of the unvoluntarily subscribed group is suspicious, for example.
