I just tried to read another group which had also expired as I have not read it for a while, and I have the same problem.  On opening the group, I get a 420 error and no placeholder.  First and last article numbers are shown as 6662.  The group is in interesting.groups, but fetchnews reports "No new articles" for that group, where it should be doing an initial fetch of a few hundred.  It looks like this not a one-off freak occurrence.
