i have sufficient logs available.  there are very many empty(!) new
groups, and each time news.fu-berlin.de tells me:

well, i don't know how you would interpret this, but it could be a
timing problem, as i had quite a number of other large TCP packets in
between.  i'll try tomorrow.

the reason i asked was that rarely more than 400 newgroups come along
news.cis.dfn.de, not even at gmane.  i query every day!

i should do this anyway, because i never really tried this, but i fear
this would tell me less than the data on the wire.  even with loops
the PC constantly changes.  i'd have to really single step around...
