I think you need leafnode version 2 if you want a leafnode which
supports local groups.

I'm utterly clueless about openwebmail, so I can't help you there.
The "upstream" is the machine mentioned in the server = line in
your leafnode config file. 

Well, unless I'm terribly mistaken, you should remove your current
leafnode installlation and try eiter a leafnode 2.0 prerelease
or if prereleases sound a little scary, try looking at some of the
other news server software mentioned somewhere at http://www.leafnode.org/.
