I usually recommend this:

                  owner       mode
/etc/leafnode    root:news    0750 (you could also use root:root 0711)
/etc/leafnode/*  root:news    0640

What does "rpm -V leafnode | grep etc" print?

There are many "." directories, in fact one per real directory name ;-)
