I will keep an eye on the fetchmail.lck file.  
I don't think that is it though.  It runs, says it is going to fetch
articles but then does not.  When it is messing up it stops 
in the same place each time.  Of course, since I posted my first message
last night, things are working better. Maybe it is a problem with my
ISP's news server and they fix it eventually.
