I fail to see where leafnode 2.x is slow. The code that introduced the
two stat(2) calls per article slow down does not exist in leafnode
2.x. The "fork to background to update overview data" was removed in
September last year (20020902a), since then, overview data is written
when the article is stored. This also avoids reading data from disk that
used to be in the cache and might have expired, speeding things up
especially under memory pressure.
