[leafnode-list] Running well - thanks
Support lists like this are usually full of people's problems - and over
recent days I've shared a few. However, having upgraded to the latest version
of Leafnode, everything is now running smoothly, and I just wanted to record
my appreciation for the people who write and support such useful open-source
software.
While I'm here, a couple of notes about the documentation. The 'install' file
is mostly excellent and very clear, but a couple of things could be usefully
added.
* I've already mentioned this, but the notes could be clearer about how to
configure your news client - ie, defining the server as 'localhost'. It's
probably obvious to Linux techies, but took me a bit of experimenting.
* For SuSE users (like me - I use SuSE 8.2), be aware that SuSE can mess with
your 'hosts' file. Leafnode needs to have an entry in this with a
fully-qualified domain name. But every time I install something or configure
something with Yast, it messes this up. My computer is called 'scoop' and is
found at 192.168.0.2. So Yast writes an entry in the hosts file like this:
192.168.0.2 scoop.local scoop
But I need to add a FQDN to this. I happen to own a few domain names,
including montcocher.com, so I changed the line to:
192.168.0.2 montcocher.com scoop.local scoop
Which works fine. But every time I use Yast, it gets set back to the former
version. When I run Mozilla Thunderbird, it throws up an 'NNTP error' message
and I can't view the newgroups. Now I've discovered where the problem lies,
it's easily fixed, but I thought I'd share in case others have similar
problems.
