I had similar problems on a Windows-Netscape.
The linux (heino) serves as a gateway (leafnode) and is a DNS-server for 
my LAN (mickie.ch).
I "solved" this problem with an entry in /etc/hosts as follows:
192.168.248.1   heino.mickie.ch heino news.mickie.ch
I'm using "dnsmasq" ( if i used bind/named i had to edit the zones etc...)

The hanging Netscape disappeared.
