The problem is _not_ the group name! Fetchnews sees a reply that is
totally out of synch. It gets a reply in LIST syntax in response to a
GROUP command.

Which _exact_ version of leafnode are you using? Does this problem show
with 1.9.43 or 1.9.44? Some older versions had bugs that could let
client and server go out of synch particularly in context with
filtering.

If this problems still shows in 1.9.43 or 1.9.44, please set
debugmode=3, enable news.debug logging in /etc/syslog.conf, run
fetchnews, reset debugmode to 0 and gzip or bzip2 the log and send it to
my private address. Please mention "leafnode" in the subject. (Just
pressing "Reply" in your mailer is fine.)
