The amount logged through debugmode=4095 or 255 may simply be excessive,
some debug modes may also enable extra checks. Now, these set 12 or 8
bits, try setting fewer bits at the same time.
Does your syslogd write the debug log synchronously or asynchronously?
Linux syslogd will write synchronously if you give just a file name on
the right hand side, and asynchronously if you precede the file name by
a minus character ("-", in syslog.conf, that is). Remember to SIGHUP
syslogd after all syslog.conf changes.
