for comparison, here's how I changed my FQDN, once I had one:

[thufir@arrakis ~]$ cat /etc/hosts
# Do not remove the following line, or various programs
# that require network functionality will fail.
127.0.0.1       arrakis.homelinux.org   arrakis localhost.localdomain   localhost

[thufir@arrakis ~]$ cat /etc/sysconfig/network
NETWORKING=yes
HOSTNAME=arrakis.homelinux.org


[thufir@arrakis ~]$
[thufir@arrakis ~]$ date
Sun Sep 24 19:36:26 IST 2006
[thufir@arrakis ~]$
