what does "status=2 (SOCKET)" mean? is this from errno.h or fetchmail
specific? did you recompile these programs properly after an update or
were they binary packages? it seems fetchnews is from june 2008, the
kernel from october 2007, other than that i don't see this info.

i run freebsd, and darwin is a spinoff of that, but 2 -> "ENOENT No such
file or directory" doesn't make much sense to me.  poll(2) and select(2)
don't return ENOENT on fbsd-8.

did you try a tcptrace to compare what AppleMail does to what the fetch*
programs do?
