README - WebWasher 3.0 for Linux -------------------------------- What is WebWasher? WebWasher makes your Internet more efficient and enjoyable. WebWasher filters out unwanted informations contained in Web pages before they are ever loaded. Banner-Ads, Graphics, Frames, Javascript, Java-Applets, Pop-up Windows, etc. that you do not want to reach your PC. Web pages are displayed free of advertising on your browser! What is required for WebWasher? You need a standard PC with an internet connection. Your Linux distribution should contain at least glibc 2.1. Webwasher is known to work with: - Debian GNU/Linux 2.2 (potato) and 2.3 (woody) - Linux Mandrake 7.1 - RedHat Linux 6.1 and 7.0 - SuSE Linux 7.0 - SuSE Linux 7.1 (the install script displays an error, but you can ignore that) How do i install WebWasher? - RPM * rpm -i .rpm - TAR.GZ: * Unpack the tar.gz archive: tar xvzf .tar.gz * Become root * Run webwasher.install WebWasher installs itself in the following directories: /usr/bin/wwasher the binary /etc/wwasher/ the main configuration files (start.conf, wwasher.conf) /usr/share/wwasher/ some templates for the error messages and the web interface /var/run/wwasher/ empty directory where the pid-file is placed /var/log/wwasher/ empty directory where the log-files are placed WebWasher comes with an init-Script, that is placed in /etc/software/init.d. The installer will automatically create symbolic links in the rcX.d directories of your distribution. During installation, a new unprivileged user wwasher ist created on your system. WebWasher will run with the rights of this user. This user has a blocking password, so nobody can login to this account. After successful installation, WebWasher is started immediately. How do i start WebWasher? Usually, you don't have to start WebWasher yourself. After installation it is started automatically. Everytime you reboot your system, WebWasher will be started by the init-Script. If you want to start or stop WebWasher yourself, you can run the init script with the parameters start, restart, stop or status. The script is located in /etc/software/init.d/. How do i use WebWasher? Configure your favourite browser to use the HTTP Proxy :9090. That's all. How do i configure WebWasher? You can modify the configuration of WebWasher by entering the special URL http://-web.washer-/ in your Webbrowser. The default user is admin with the password webwasher. Do i have to pay for using WebWasher? The usage of this version of WebWasher is free for non-commercial purposes. What is the difference between the free and the commercial version of WebWasher? The free version is restricted to 2 clients or 20 simultaneous connections. The security features (java-, javascript-, activex-, mediatype-filter) are disabled.
