I hate to followup on myself, but here are some more changes in addition
to the previous ones:

activutil.c:
- A closedir was missing in fakeactive(). Fixed.

fetchnews.c:
- If upstream server understood XGTITLE, new groups and their descriptions
  were not entered in active file. Fixed (hopefully).

nntpd.c:
- Complains now if configuration file cannot be read.

xoverutil.c:
- Information about updating .overview files is not displayed on stdout
  anymore.
