[leafnode-list] error writing groupinfo file (disk full?)

I get this error in the log
 error writing groupinfo file (disk full?)
but the disk is not full.

$ ls -l
total 1658
-rw-rw-r--   1 news     news       788182 Jan  3 17:07 groupinfo
-rw-rw-r--   1 news     news       899072 Dec 11 13:11 groupinfo.old
-rw-rw-r--   1 news     news          528 Jan  3 17:12 news.tin.it

What should I check?
I tried
fetchnews -f
to rebuild it, but the problem persists.
