As said by others, I would prefer an RFC-conforming address. In any
case, I wonder what prevents users from setting their preferred return
address in their newsreader. Given the awful lot of people posting
with faked return addresses nowadays, this can't be too difficult :-)

Again, I think it's the responsibility of the user, not of the admin,
to put a correct return address in the From: header.

If you really want to tamper with outgoing messages, it is still possible -
as you suggested - to run a job over /var/spool/news/out.going/ before
invoking fetchnews. I would also assume that this is a much more flexible
solution than to build something into Leafnode.
