It looks like you're right, though I haven't looked an INN's code
either. However, INN has ready-made .overview files in XOVER response
format available, it just "needs to grep" the proper lines and send them
away from a single file, which is probably the reason while XOVER is
fast.

I'm not sure how INN would behave with News in Dosen format; but since
XOVER is there for leafnode 1.9, let's just use it. I posted some
figures to de.comm.software.newsserver recently.

If there is demand, I may make that a configuration option whether to
try XHDR or XOVER first, currently, leafnode uses XOVER and falls back
to XHDR.

Note that if you send more than a single XHDR per group, XOVER will
probably win in spite of the higher amount of data for reduced
latency. With XOVER, you get maxage, minlines, maxbytes checks for free,
with XHDR, they each cost.

I am attaching three lines from my
/var/spool/news/over.view/de/comm/software/newsserver/.overview as a
sample.
