[leafnode-list] retrieving threads

I'm using 2.0b8 of leafnode and accessing news with gnus and every so often
I get the error 
gnus-summary-refer-thread: 
   Can't fetch thread from backends that don't support NOV
(when trying to fetch all articles in the current thread)

I've got rid of the problem by a fetchnews -f but this is a bit drastic!
Is this a known problem? How to diagnose this one further?
