I still don't know where the core dump went, but the problem was apparently 
caused by configuring it with ipv6. I have ipv6 in the kernel, and some 
interfaces have ipv6 addresses, and xinetd on Mandrake 8.1 requires ipv6, but 
I don't have an ipv6 connection to the outside world.
