You shouldn't use "notail" on a news spool. If you do, you're losing Reiser's 
big advantage handling small files. The only partition that should be mounted 
notail AFAIK is /boot, but since that's read-only except when you install new 
kernels or frob the bootloader, I don't see a point in using Reiser for it.

My /var is not mounted with the noatime option, but I added -f to the texpire 
command, and it is now working.
