I went back and did the "configure - make ..."
sequence over again on leafnode-1.9.24.rel, with 
"./configure --prefix=/usr/local"
(originally I had done simply "./configure").
Everything seems now to work fine, with 'config'
in '/usr/local/etc'.

Thanks for all the help. I think I'll leave well
enough alone, and not play with a "devel" version :-)
