Looks like either your connection ([i]pppd or something) goes away in
mid-flight (flaky line?), or the upstream server dies while your
fetchnews run has not yet completed at that time (i. e. after fetchnews
has just sent MODE READER and expects the "200 OK" reply from
news.bredband.net) -- the latter would not be your fault.

As to the "Illegal seek", the message may not actually be meaningful and
be clobbered or bogus. The first part "NNTP server went away" is the
relevant one.
