Texpire does that. It makes two passes:

1- expire the article hard links (these have numbers as names) from the
/var/spool/news/some/news/group directories

2- expire all files from /var/spool/news/message.id/XXX/ that have only
one hard link (i. e. are no longer listed in news groups).
