None of that looks right.  You should be getting a leafnode server greeting:

$ telnet localhost nntp
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to news.piggo.dyndns.org.
Escape character is '^]'.
200 Leafnode NNTP daemon, version 2.0.0.alpha20060831a at news.piggo.dyndns.org
^]
telnet> quit
Connection closed.
