You can also try to put the line "debugmode = 1" as the first line
in /etc/leafnode/config and look for debug-messages in syslog.

It's possible, that you have to enable logging of debug-messages
with the line "*.=debug   /var/log/debugmessages" in /etc/syslog.conf.
