Probably because the compiler flags are only set for gcc and not
for any proprietary cc we don't know.

Please go through the FAQ number 3. If this doesn't help post the
nntpd line(s) of your inetd.conf, the output of inetd -d, 
ps aux | grep inetd, /etc/hosts.* and try to start leafnode from
the command line.
