[leafnode-list] A new articles problem
Hello all,
I am meeting an odd problem with leafnode 1.9.14. I am using linux
Mandrake 7.1 with glibc 2.1.2.
The first fetchnews works correctly, it fetches all the
newsgroups. Then I select some newsgroups, fetch them, nothing wrong
until there.
At that point, when I fetch new news on a newsgroup I have already
fetched, fetchnews works correctly, but no new message appears in the
news reader. After some time and some other tests using fetchnews, I
can see /some/ articles of /some/ newsgroups (but not all) appear,
while other newsgroups appear like not having new newsgroups. I'll
try to show that (but it does not seem deterministic, which make it
hard to describe).
I'll take the newsgroup fr.misc.droit as an example. The first fetch
for that newsgroup gave 21 articles. I used fetchnews many times to
retrieve new article, and while it seemed to work, no new articles
appeared. At that point, the content of my
/var/spool/news/fr/misc/droit/ directory was:
[root@brocoli droit]# ls
10 12 14 16 18 2 21 23 25 27 29 30 32 34 5 7 9
11 13 15 17 19 20 22 24 26 28 3 31 33 4 6 8 internet/
However, at the same time, if I telnet the newsserver :
[root@brocoli droit]# telnet localhost nntp
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.localdomain.
Escape character is '^]'.
200 Leafnode NNTP Daemon, version 1.9.14 running at brocoli.charabia.net
group fr.misc.droit
211 22 1 22 fr.misc.droit group selected
^]
telnet> quit
So there is a problem there : 33 article (2 to 34) in the spool, but
1-22 seen.
Then I activated the syslog debugging messages, and fetched another
time with fetchnews. Here comes an excerpt of the syslog debug
messages :
Jul 22 14:12:06 brocoli fetchnews[1679]: reading XOVER info from /var/spool/news/fr/misc/droit/35
Jul 22 14:12:06 brocoli fetchnews[1679]: updated 1 lines in /var/spool/news/fr/misc/droit/.overview
So, it seems to work correctly, one message was retrieved and written
in the .overview file. I check the new content of the var spool dir:
[root@brocoli droit]# ls
10 12 14 16 18 2 21 23 25 27 29 30 32 34 4 6 8 internet/
11 13 15 17 19 20 22 24 26 28 3 31 33 35 5 7 9
After using many newsreader, to check that, I telneted again and had
exactly the same results as before : 1-22 articles.
While writing this article, I telneted again, and then it worked
correctly :
[root@brocoli droit]# telnet localhost nntp
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.localdomain.
Escape character is '^]'.
200 Leafnode NNTP Daemon, version 1.9.14 running at brocoli.charabia.net
group fr.misc.droit
211 35 1 35 fr.misc.droit group selected
Ok, so the articles of that group, at least, appeared. But some other
groups stay out of new news articles. That's particularly odd !
Has anyone an idea of what is happening ? The first time it did that,
I looked for some permission problem, but found nothing. Then I
simply mv /var/spool/news to /var/spool/news.old and did a new "make
install" so that the installation script could install a sane spool
base, but it did not fix anything, as the problem came back again.
Has anyone an idea ?
